eomalakta.org
A website ran here from 2000 to 2006. It was a field of keyboard noise with a name buried in it letter by letter, a curse hidden in black-on-black, and the words Beware of the fish people, they are the true enemy! in white near the middle. Then it decayed, and then it expired.
In 2026 it was rebuilt from 78 captures in the Wayback Machine. The rebuild is not a restoration. It is eleven rooms, no JavaScript, and the recovered material is real rather than imitated.
What the archaeology found
The author had already been doing this. He preserved each dead generation of his
own site verbatim in a keyboard-mash subdirectory — /6njkb3/ for 1999,
/zxoix/ for 2000 — and linked them from the noise page as
[ origional site ] and [ later ]. Identical archive digests proved it.
Self-archaeology, as autobiography, in 2000.
And in the noise itself: || stands at character column 59 on
24 of the page's 28 lines — an unbroken vertical stroke down the whole wall,
breaking on exactly the two lines that carry its only real links. It is the logical
OR out of COMMERCIALISM ={eAt's || FLESH }: eat or be eaten. It
had been a plumb line in that noise for twenty-six years without anyone standing it up.
Eleven circuits
The first version of this rebuild was a maze at the entrance and a labyrinth after it. That was a mistake, and it was the interesting kind. A maze has wrong turns and rewards the person who works it out. A labyrinth has none and cannot be failed — the path doubles back so that you are furthest from the middle exactly when you are closest, and the only task is to keep walking the one path you are already on.
So the maze was not removed. It was found to have been a labyrinth the whole time. Eleven circuits, which is the count at Chartres:
| 1 | / | the wall |
| 2 | /6njkb3/ | 1999 |
| 3 | /zxoix/ | 2000 |
| 4 | /2002/ | 2002 |
| 5 | /amercia/ | the condition |
| 6 | /hself/ | the turning |
| 7 | /comm/ | the healing |
| 8 | /ixthus/ | the recognition |
| 9 | /slow/ | the confession |
| 10 | /404.html | the tomb |
| 11 | /bread/ | the centre |
The first four run backwards in time — 2026, 1999, 2000, 2002 — and then forward.
You descend into the buried strata before you climb. /2000/ is not a
circuit; it is the stone the whole thing is cut from, and nothing has been done to it
at all.
Every hopeful door on this site — /forgiveness/,
/support/, /pr0f1t/ — is painted on the wall and answers
404, and the 404 is circuit 10. Wandering does not put you off the path. It is one of
the ways along it.
How it is built
Eleven hand-written files. Zero JavaScript, permanently — the policy header blocks it outright. No build step at serve time, no dependencies, no external requests. Whitespace is load-bearing: the walls, a silhouette, and an acrostic are aligned by literal character position, and a runnable set of invariants guards them.
Three devices worth naming: a walk navigated entirely in CSS through
:target, so that the same room read one way going in and another coming
out, with nothing added and nothing hidden; a wall that unmakes the curse into
COMMUNION ={ tAke, eAt || my FLESH } letter by letter over three
minutes, in pure CSS; and a viewport filled by eight text-shadow copies,
which adds no characters at all, so column-aligned meaning cannot move.
The one thing that is lit in every room is the cell you are standing on. Over eleven circuits it ripens from the 2000 page's own phosphor green to the colour of the horizon. It was never a different colour arriving from somewhere else.
Walking it
Start at the front door and take the lit mark. It is at the same place in every
room — character column 59, where || has stood since 2000 — and it is
never hidden. Everything else on the site is. Hidden things are the reward for
looking; they are never the way on.
When you reach the middle, turn around. The way out is the way in, and it is not the same.
The walk ends at the greater horizon.
enter · the page as it was in 2004
The earlier versions are kept whole, which is the practice this site inherited from its author: v2, the walk that first reached the horizon · v1, the maze.
